This report describes a symposium held in Iowa City, Iowa September 6-8, 1978 focusing on nutrition in the medical and dental curriculum, including the importance of early nutrition and the development of dietary patterns in infants. Topics include the importance of dietary habits and subsequent choices of foods in terms of general health and prevention of dental caries, the role of fluoride and its presence in commercially available baby foods as well as the impact of water fluoridation, the role of snack foods and the frequency of eating on oral health, and the role of phosphates on oral health. This training and reference guide describes programs that have been used by Tufts Dental Facilities for the Handicapped and Boston University Special Needs Dental Program in Massachusetts. An attempt has been made to make this text technical enough to provide accurate and up-to-date information, but understandable to parents, staff, and health care workers. Sections 2, 3, and 4 address specific issues for institutions, community programs, and parents. Sections 1 and 5 contain dental information that should be available to all persons providing daily oral care to special needs persons. This brochure defines and outlines the importance of weaning a child and teaching the child how to drink from a cup. It discusses negative health outcomes from delayed weaning, such as tooth decay, ear infections, increased resistance to change with age, and reduced appetite for solid food. It also outlines methods to make the weaning process easier for the mother and the child. The brochure was developed with low-literacy criteria for parents and caregivers in the Massachusetts WIC/MCH programs by the Massachusetts WIC Nutrition Education Task Force and was field-tested by WIC program nutritionists.
